The purpose of a detention basin is to prevent undesirable deposition in downstream waterways, to trap sediment originating from construction sites and to provide a basin for deposition and storage of sediments and debris.

Straw and turf reinforcement matting are used to stabilize the slopes of the basin.

To improve soil quality, compost was mixed into the soil. A special screen was designed to cover the drainage outlet, preventing silt from draining away.

Lush green grass is a result of adding compost. When water drains away from the pond the silt is absorbed back into the turf bed.
